Sourdough Everything: Sweet and Savory Recipes for Beautiful Breads and Other Bakes by Rachel Pardoe

During pioneer times, baking bread was a necessity of life. In more modern times, it seems that the making homemade bread craze started again out of necessity during the COVID 19 pandemic. The no-knead artisan bread method has become popular and remains so to this day. Mastering sourdough bread making also took hold with many cooks caring and feeding their ‘starter’ with loving care. Whether you are new to sourdough bread making or have mastered this skill, Rachel Pardoe’s new book Sourdough Everything: Sweet and Savory Recipes for Beautiful Breads and Other Bakes is a must-have book.

Rachel Pardoe is a Canadian sourdough influencer and founder of @sourdough_enzo. She is renowned for creating breads that are not only delicious but also look as good as they taste. Although making sourdough bread may seem daunting, on the book jacket Pardoe states: “Creating amazing sourdough is deceptively simple—it’s part science and part craft—but it all starts with three basic ingredients: flour, water, and salt. And the result is something truly magical.”

That magic comes to life in Pardoe’s recipes, paired with gorgeous photos by Marianne Rothbauer. This hefty hardcover covers all the basics, from making your own sourdough starter and feeding your starter, to tools and techniques, proofing and shaping, and finished products. This includes making basic, enriched and sweet sourdough breads to using sourdough discard to make bread, scones, focaccia, bagels, waffles, muffins, cookies and more.

A standout chapter is called “Decorating Sourdough Breads,” where Pardoe shows readers how to use bread-decorating tools to score the bread and create artistic patterns. She also demonstrates how to decorate with stencils, how to create seed designs and how to master three-dimensional paint designs that look so impressive you won’t want to eat your work of art (but you must!)

From mastering basic sourdough loaves to showy three-dimensional loaves, Rachel Pardoe’s Sourdough Everything will have you turning out bakery-style loaves and treats in no time! This is a terrific book for all bread makers.

It seems that Stanley Tucci is everywhere these days: co-starring in the latest version of The Devil Wears Prada alongside Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt and hosting his  own TV food/travel show called Stanley Tucci: Searching for Italy. So when I came across The Tucci Cookbook, I just had to get a copy.

The Tucci Cookbook is written by Stanley Tucci with Joan and Stan Tucci, Gianni Scappin and Mimi Taft. What’s truly special is that, according to a note in the front of the book, the author is donating 10% of his advance and 25% of any of his subsequent earnings from the book (in each case net of agency fees) to the Food Bank for New York City.

Following a preface by Stanley Tucci and an introduction to the Tropiano and Tucci families, the book includes chapters on Appetizers and Salads, Soups, Eggs, Bread and Pizza, Pasta, Rice and Risotto, Vegetables and Side Dishes, Meat, Poultry, Fish and Seafood and Desserts. You will discover page after page of delicious recipes, personal notes and stories by Stanley Tucci along with suggested wine pairings.

How good do these recipes sound? “Clams Baked in the Half Shell, Venetian Seafood Salad, Rosemary Focacccia, Linguine with Capers and Olives, Asparagus Risotto, Steak Oreganato, Roman-Style Meatloaf, Chicken Cacciatore, Livia’s Tiramisu….the yumminess goes on! Several are family recipes, passed along from a generation or more.

In the introduction, Tucci says: “Throughout my childhood, almost every night in the middle of dinner, my father would shake his head and ask, ‘What does the rest of the world eat?” That’s how good my mother’s cooking has always been—to my dad, it was inconceivable that anyone could possibly eat as well as we did. And I agreed with him every time.”

If you want some mouthwatering recipes to wow your family and friends, look no further than The Tucci Cookbook, available at bookstores everywhere or on Amazon.
