TORONTO, ON., April 26, 2021 – Tonight in the GTA, starting at 7:50 pm rising in the east, we will see the April full moon which is also referred to as a Pink Moon. This full moon is also the first in a series of three supermoons, which means three straight full moons will be seen at their closest points to Earth in its monthly orbit.

The Pink ‘Supermoon’. will appear full for about three days around this time, from Sunday night through Wednesday morning.

According to the farmer’s almanac, the full Moon in April, is called the Pink Moon, named after the herb moss pink, also known as creeping phlox, moss phlox, or mountain phlox. The plant is native to the eastern North America and is one of the earliest widespread flowers of spring.

Also, this Moon is also referred to as the Sprouting Grass Moon, the Egg Moon, and among coastal tribes of North America, the Fish Moon, as this was when the shad swam upstream to spawn.

The supermoon title was first established by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1979. According to NASA, it refers to either a new or full Moon that occurs when the Moon is within 90% of perigee, which means when the moon is at its closest approach to Earth.

For those living on the either coast, when the full moon appears as a supermoon it has an additional pull on the tides. All full moons cause more adverse tides but when they are closer to Earth, EarthSky says “High tides climb up especially high, and, on the same day, low tides plunge especially low.”

Also, according to EarthSky, supermoons recur in a series of cycles of 413 days (about one year, one month and 18 days), which means the next series of full supermoons will come about one month and 18 days later next year, in 2022.

April’s ‘Pink supermoon’ will appear close to full for three nights from April 26-28, but will be at its fullest on April 26.
