Special Weather Statement issued by ECCC for GTA

TORONTO, April 11, 2024 – Although it already has been raining on and off all day, at 2:40 PM EDT Thursday 11 April 2024 Environment & Climate Change Canada (ECCC) has issued a Special Weather Statement for the Toronto area.

ECCC warns residents and visitors alike that “Significant rainfall expected today through Friday morning.” This will be followed by high winds of up to 80 km/h Friday evening.

Rainfall warning

Total rainfall amounts of 20 to 45 mm. Locally higher amounts are possible for areas that receive thunderstorms.

Timing

Continuing through tonight, then tapering to showers Friday morning.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms

Rain has overspread the area and will continue through tonight. A risk of thunderstorms will develop this afternoon into tonight. For areas that receive thunderstorms, rainfall amounts may approach 50 mm locally by Friday morning.

Rain tapers off Friday morning

According to Canada’s most trusted weather source, the rain is expected to taper to showers through Friday morning. Northwesterly winds will intensify in behind the system late Friday afternoon into Friday night with gusts up to 80 km/h. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads. Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible.
