TORONTO, March 22, 2022 – A Special weather statement in effect for southern Ontario with significant rainfall and risk of freezing rain headed our way on Wedenesday.

ECCC warns of Rainfall amounts up to 20 mm may result in localized water pooling on roads and says freezing rain is possible and may lead to dangerous icy surfaces.

Downtown Toronto and around the lake will most likely receive rain while in areas north of the 401, freezing rain is also possible.

Umbrellas will most likely be rendered useless as in addition to all this rain, strong easterly winds gusting up to 70 km/h are also going to sweep across southern Ontario on Wednesday morning into the afternoon.

Details about the Special Weather Statement

ECCC says, “Freezing rain is possible beginning Wednesday morning, however it is likely to mainly affect areas north of highway 401. Areas near the shores of Lake Ontario are likely to remain above the freezing mark, and as a result should receive only rain. Temperatures will rise above the freezing mark Wednesday afternoon ending the risk of freezing rain. Rainfall amounts of up to 20 mm are possible Wednesday night, localized water pooling on roads is possible.”

Surfaces such as highways, roads, walkways and parking lots will become icy, slippery and hazardous. Ice build-up may cause tree branches to break. Utility outages may occur.
