The era of streaming services in Canada: Then, Now and Beyond

The internet has made it possible to view content available in different countries. Many streaming platforms are available for you to subscribe to and start watching your favourite shows/movies online.

The good thing about online streaming is that you don’t have to wait for a whole week to watch an episode of your favourite series. Instead, you can just watch all the episodes available on your preferred streaming platform all at once.

Unfortunately, many streaming platforms face geo-restrictions, making it impossible to view their content outside the region that it’s authorized to air. But you don’t have to worry as you can unblock streaming services with StreamingRant, one of the most reliable platforms to learn about streaming platforms and VPNs.

Streaming platforms like Netflix, Amazon, and HBO Max changed how we used to receive content on TV. And one of the countries that adapted to the change was Canada. Below we look at how it was back then, now, and beyond.

The demise of Television

Years back in 1952, Television was the only source of entertainment in Canada. The cable providers decide what you will watch, and the time you will watch it. But everything changed when people started to use streaming platforms in Canada.

The streaming platforms brought content from many different parts of the world. And slowly, Canadians adapted to this way of streaming. However, many Televisions on the market are not getting bought as before. Many don’t have enough reason to buy it, especially if it is not possible for you to cast your favourite show or movie on it.

The main reason streaming platforms like Netflix are a success in Canada is the availability of many shows and movies for you to choose from. Unlike Television, you choose what you want to watch and the time you want to watch it.

Streaming platforms are the future of entertainment in the world. The benefits of streaming platforms are that content is shared worldwide, gaining more views, unlike Television, where you only rely on the locals.

The popularity of Streaming Services

In 2019, streaming platforms thrived, streaming platforms like Disney Plus and Apple TV. However, Disney Plus came up with a different idea of targeting an old audience. They consisted of content that attracted the older audience while also having content available for the youth. As a result, Disney advertised itself well, and it became a top competitor to Netflix.

It’s now estimated that Disney Plus will have over 60-90 million subscribers by 2024. Because of the availability of many streaming platforms, people usually subscribe and unsubscribe from their streaming platforms because they have options.

However, streaming platforms can extend the subscription period of a customer in an attempt to hold their customers. According to A.J. Black, who is the author of Myth Building in Modern Media.

When a public survey was done, it revealed that Netflix held 86% of the customers, followed by 41% of Amazon Prime viewers, followed by 25% of viewers from Hulu. Disney didn’t have many customers because it’s not available in most parts of the world, managing only 16%of viewers.

Disney would have a larger percentage only if it was available in different countries. 48.94% of streamers said they would subscribe to Disney Plus only if it was made available in their countries.

But most of the viewers were satisfied with the streaming platforms they had been using 81.63% of them were happy with their service.

The Effects and Future of Streaming Services

People want to be updated with content, and streaming services deliver the latest content without delay. However, one business that is under threat is the theatre business. The theatre business has been affected by many factors, including social distancing due to COVID-19 and quarantine.

Due to COVID, why would anyone want to risk their health by going to a theatre when you can stream the same movie from their home?

Streaming platforms, on the other hand, have taken advantage. Devices like Amazon’s Firestick make it super easy to watch documentaries online and of course, any other type of show. So you don’t have to leave your home to watch your favourite show or movie that has been released, for they are all available on your streaming platforms.

Streaming platforms make their own content. For example, you can see a movie or a series made by a Netflix original. Meaning the show is owned by the platform and only available on Netflix. That affects the theatres and TV because they won’t show a Netflix original. After all, Netflix doesn’t share its original content.

The only disadvantages of streaming platforms are that many of them face geo-restrictions. Meaning they may happen not to be available in the region that you are in.

Summary

Streaming platforms have gained popularity in Canada and many countries in the world. Affecting how you used to view content. Giving you the freedom to watch what you want.

Unfortunately, some of the content available in a different country may not be available in the region you are in, meaning you will have limited content. But you can unblock the geo-restrictions of any streaming platform by using a premium VPN.
