Featuring Original Music by Measha Brueggergosman

The Hogtown Collective, a Toronto-based immersive theatre company, is proud to launch The Christie Pits Riot audio walking tour on September 30, 2021. Created by Sam Rosenthal and Drew Carnwath, with music by international award-winning soprano Measha Brueggergosman, The Christie Pits Riot is an original radio drama podcast based on the infamous riot at Christie Pits Park on August 16, 1933 in Toronto.

The Christie Pits Riot tells a day in the life story of a 12-year-old Jewish boy, Joey Rosenbaum, who works at his father’s store at Bloor Street and Manning Avenue in Toronto. This scripted podcast is complemented by original music, including the new song Champions by Measha Brueggergosman and Lennie Gallant. The Christie Pits Riot invites audiences to listen at home, or use the Anchor app to be guided by an immersive walking tour through sections of downtown Toronto.

As Joey Rosenbaum does his daily rounds along Bloor Street near Christie Pits ballpark, audiences will get a snapshot of life – particularly, Anti-Semitic life – in Toronto in 1933 from his perspective. When a riot breaks out on the evening of August 16 after a swastika flag is displayed to intimidate the Harbord Playground Baseball Team, Joey is tasked with getting his friend Rachel home. They are helped along the way by Nala, who teaches them about the importance of standing up for what you believe in.
