TORONTO, July 16, 2024 – There have been several GTA roads closed as well as transit delays and cancellations due to flash flooding today. Over 96 mm of rain fell in some areas over a very short period of time, overwhelming sewer systems, the water table and other water tributaries. Additionally, Toronto Hydro says over 165,000 homes are without power downtown.
Heavy amounts of rain began about 8:45 at Pearson Airport and by noon over 96 mm had fallen, according to Environment Canada data. But the majority, over 60 mm falling within two hours, a prospect too much to handle by the city’s sewer system.
Throughout the city there have been numerous road closures over the past few hours with some beginning to reopen but here is a short list:
Toronto Road Closures due to flooding
Lake Shore Blvd from British Columbia to Strachan
Bayview and Nesbitt Dr. – (Bayview Avenue is closed – 12:35 pm – in both directions from River Street to just north of Queen Street)
Wilson bridge
DVP at Dundas, Milwood, Don Mills and Lawrence Ave.
Southbound Don Valley Parkway from Bayview Avenue to the Gardiner Expressway
Westbound Kipling on ramp is closed
Toronto Hydro declares widespread power outage
Toronto Hydro has said that a widespread power outage is affecting approximately 165,000 homes. They have also provided a power outage map: https://outagemap.torontohydro.com/. Currently, there is no estimated time for power restoration.
Flooding at Pape and St. Patrick TTC stations
Additionally, TTC says they are experiencing delays and diversions on a number of routes. Trains are also bypassing St Patrick and Pape Station due to flooding. Elevators and escalators at Pape have been shut down. Visit http://ttc.ca for up-to-date service information.
GO Train updates and Union Station flooded
Meanwhile, some flooding has occurred in the Bay concourse at Union Station and escalators are not working. Metrolinx has issued the following update for anyone taking the GO train.
“Environment Canada has issued rainfall and storm warnings throughout our rail and bus operating areas. Extremely heavy rainfall has slowed the ability of the ground to absorb the water, which is causing areas of flooding. Total rainfall amounts are expected to reach up to 125 mm, which will taper off into the evening. There is a potential that some services could be modified or delayed today due to weather conditions. Delays, cancelations, and modifications are expected.
