TORONTO, ON., June 9. 2020 — Toronto Police Chief, Mark Saunders announced Monday afternoon that his last day as Chief of the Toronto Police Service will be July 31, 2020. Chief Saunders has served with the Toronto Police Service for almost four decades and as Chief for more than 5 years.

The Chief announced the news earlier today to the members of the Service and followed it up with a news conference.

Saunders, Toronto’s first Black police chief, was appointed to the position in April of 2015. He has worked with Toronto Police Service for over 37 years.

Chief Saunders said he is looking forward to spending more time with his family and to continue serving the city from outside the Service.

“I’m a free agent now,” he grinned. “I’m certainly going to work, because I don’t think my wife will want me in the house.”

Mayor John Tory expressed his gratitude to Chief Saunders, saying “On behalf of all Toronto residents, I want to thank Chief Saunders for his exemplary service.”

“He has been a dedicated and responsible chief of police who has always worked to protect the city. He cares deeply about the people of the city, all of its neighbourhoods, and about the men and women who serve with him,” said Mayor Tory.

While, Toronto Fire Chief offered congratulations, saying that Chief Saunders retiring from the Toronto police “makes me feel both sad, as he will be sadly missed, but happy as he can now focus on enjoying his family and his well deserved retirement. Congrats Chief in your well deserved retirement!”

The Chief thanked his members and asked them to keep building the strong relationships the Service has with the community, not just with words, but with action.

“The public is asking and I know that you will continue to listen. Thank you, it has been my honour to be your Chief.”

Chief Saunders thanked the Toronto Police Services Board and Mayor John Tory for their support of the Toronto Police Service.

Over the last five years, Chief Saunders was at the helm during the carding controversies, the arrest of serial killer Bruce McArthur, the mass shooting on the Danforth and the tragic van attack in North York.
