TORONTO, Sept. 1, 2026 — If you need to get to the airport on UP Express between 1 and 3 pm today, you will have to make alternate arrangements as Metrolinx announces that there will be service interruptions on four UP Express trips and two Kitchener Line trips.
Apparently, hotter temperatures like those expected today can cause rails to warp, causing a condition referred to as “sun kink” when trains run at higher speeds.
Metrolinx says, “Due to warmer temperatures today, four UP Express and two Kitchener line trips will not operate between 1 and 3 p.m.
There is no official heat warning in effect according to Environment and Climate Change Canada, but they are calling for temperatures up to 28 Celsius today and tomorrow with possible thunderstorms.
“We also closely monitor our tracks during extremely hot weather as the sun can heat up the rails and make them expand. This can cause the rails to buckle or develop kinks, called “sun kinks” and can occur when temperatures are above 30°C for two or more days.
“While trains can still travel on the tracks, for safety reasons, they need to run at a reduced speed and be carefully monitored. Sun kinks are repaired as soon as possible and usually overnight or early in the morning to not affect your commute.”
In addition, some trips on these corridors may see delays of 5-10 minutes due to heat related speed restrictions throughout the afternoon.
