TORONTO, ON. March 20, 2020 – Walmart Canada is looking to hire 10,000 new employees in order to keep up with the incredible surge in consumer demand due to shopping industry closures amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

Walmart Canada’s CEO Horacio Barbeito released a company memo Friday on the company’s website that included the need to hire 10,000 more workers. Barbeito said, “Walmart Canada is hiring. We want to immediately hire 10,000 more Associates in our stores and distribution centres. There’s a lot of work and we need you!”

The memo also stated “There’s plenty of food and supplies. Our teams are working around the clock to replenish our shelves to deal with demand.” The CEO also said “To manage supply, some stores are limiting quantities per customer to ensure there are more products available for more customers.”

Walmart Canada currently employs about 90,000 workers in Canada, according to the memo to employees. Other major Canadian retailers such as such as Canadian Tire and Amazon and major grocery chains like Loblaw, Empire and Metro are facing unprecedented demand for goods as people scramble to stock up with food and household products during Canada’s social distancing strategy to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

Walmart also said they will “dedicate the opening hour of stores exclusively for seniors, the disabled and those with vulnerable health conditions.”

High on the Walmart memo list was an assurance that “Our stores will remain open. We’re working with all levels of government to ensure grocers and pharmacies will be there for Canadian families.”
