OTTAWA, ON., July 14, 2020 — Canada – U.S. border expected to remain closed for another 30 days — According to a CTV News report it is expected that an official announcement will be made that Canada and the U.S. have agreed to keep the border between the two countries closed to non-essential travel until August 21.

Sources say both governments agree with extending the border restriction measures for another month.

The border closure between the two countries, set to expire on July 21 was enacted in March and has been extended on a month-per-month basis ever since.

Some U.S. officials in border states have been pressuring Canada to begin a phased reopening of the shared border, but record-breaking increases in new daily cases of COVID-19 in parts of the United States, and more than 3.3 million confirmed cases stateside indicate it is unsafe for Canada to open the borders.

As of today the United States has reported 3,387,053 cases of COVID-19 along with 135,984 deaths while Canada has reported 110,060 cases and 8,836 deaths due to the virus according to the COVID-19 Dashboard by the Center for Systems Science and Engineering (CSSE) at Johns Hopkins University (JHU).
