TORONTO, August 23, 2022 – The Sam McBride Toronto Islands ferry that crashed into a Queen’s Quay dock injuring a dozen passengers on the weekend has been given the okay to return to service.

Yesterday afternoon, following a comprehensive inspection by industry safety experts, Transport Canada provided clearance for the City of Toronto’s Sam McBride ferry to return to service. The clearance follows a hard docking incident on Saturday, August 20. A final series of checks will be performed on the ferry before returning it to service.

The crash taking place around 5 pm on Saturday as the boat was docking at Toronto’s Jack Layton ferry terminal, sent some passengers down the ferry stairs as they were preparing for exit. At the time, the Sam McBride, built in 1939, had about 900 passengers on board. Five of the 12 injured passengers were taken to hospital but their injuries were not deemed serious according to a report by Canadian Press.

A City of Toronto statement says at this time they welcome news of a safety review by the Transportation Safety Board of Canada and they are fully cooperating with that review. The statement by the City, reads: “Safety is paramount in all the City does. An internal City investigation is also underway. In addition, all those who work with ferry vessels are participating in a review of safe docking procedures prior to the start of each shift.”

Updated ferry schedules are available on the City’s website. Once the Sam McBride is returned to service, the City will advise the public via the website and City social media channels.
