Full Snow Moon above Toronto tonight

TORONTO, ON, Feb. 16, 2022 – The full snow moon over Toronto will be at its brightest tonight at 11:57 a.m. ET, but the best time to view it will be just after sunset. The snow moon will rise above the east-northeastern horizon on Wednesday evening, which will place it near a very bright star called Regulus in the constellation of Leo.

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the snow moon gets its name from Native American tribes as a nod to the heavy amounts of snowfall that occurred in February.

The February full moon is also referred to as the “bony moon,” “hunger moon” and “little famine moon” as snowy conditions would usually cause a scarcity in hunting resources.

And if the excitement of seeing the full snow moon isn’t enough you can also spot Venus, Mars and Mercury before sunrise. Venus will rise at approximately 4:20 a.m. Toronto time and the planet will be 22 degrees above the horizon by sunrise. This will be followed by Mars shortly after at 4:48 a.m. EDT (0948 GMT) and you might also be able to see Mercury in the west.
