Heat warning issued for Toronto and most of southern Ontario

TORONTO – July 26, 2023 – A heat warning has been issued for Toronto and most of southern Ontario with hot and humid conditions expected today through Friday. Environment and Climate Change Canada says we can expect temperatures to reach 30 to 33 degrees Celsius today and that Thursday, will be slightly cooler, but still very humid with humidex values in the upper thirties.

Extreme heat coming Friday

Friday is expected to be extremely hot with Humidex values reaching 40 for many areas, according to ECCC. So those attending Toronto Festival of Beer will be seeking out the shady spots at Exhibition Place. Minimum temperatures in the low twenties will provide little relief from the heat.

Cooler temperatures are expected Saturday.

Of course, as usual during the hottest days, areas near the lakes can expect to remain cooler than areas inland.

Bad air quality

Hot and humid air can also bring deteriorating air quality and can result in the Air Quality Health Index approaching the high risk category.

Signs of Heat Illness

Watch for the effects of heat illness: swelling, rash, cramps, fainting, heat exhaustion, heat stroke and the worsening of some health conditions. Drink plenty of water even before you feel thirsty and stay in a cool place.

Check on older family, friends and neighbours. Make sure they are cool and drinking water Never leave people or pets inside a parked vehicle. Outdoor workers should take regularly scheduled breaks in a cool place.
