Large chunk of Scarborough Bluffs collapses into lake
TORONTO, ON., Aug. 23, 2020 — Beach-goers at Scarborough Bluffs today received n explosive shock in the form of a portion of the cliff collapsing right before their eyes, near Lookout Point.
Fortunately, no one was hurt as a large chunk of the cliff gave way at about 4 pm on Sunday. Toronto Police Service tweeted out that it was a boulder that dropped and sounded like an explosion.
The Scarborough Bluffs and escarpment extending about 15 km along the shore of Lake Ontario, from the Eastern Beaches of Toronto in the west, to East Point Park in the east. At its highest point, the escarpment rises 90 metres (300 ft) above the shoreline.
The Scarborough Bluffs are a significant geological feature resulting from the accumulation of sedimentary deposits over 12,000 years ago. They were formed by the natural processes of wind and water erosion from Lake Ontario.
The City of Toronto website warns, “The Bluffs’ edge is unstable. Stay behind the fences and use your common sense. Do not approach the edge of the bluffs.”
