Maple Leafs reveal Reverse-Retro third jersey for 2020-21
All 31 NHL teams reveal 2021 Reverse-Retro jerseys
Today, the Toronto Maple Leafs along with the rest of the NHL unveiled what their 2020-21 retro-reverse third jersey will look like and the reactions are mixed.
Many diehard Leafs fans were hoping for that 70s look from the days of Keon, Sittler, Salming and MacDonald. Some would prefer the 70s striped arms with the original six stylized Leafs crest. While others gave shoutouts to the Sundin-era vintage jersey that had been worn in 1998-99 commemorating the closing of Maple Leaf Gardens.
All 31 NHL reverse retro jerseys go on sale the first week of December in stores and online, retailing for $200 to $250 in Canada.
“Hockey fans love retro jerseys and Reverse Retro is a great opportunity for Adidas to work closely with the NHL and all 31 teams to bring back a design from a meaningful point in team history with a unique twist,” said Dan Near, Senior Director at Adidas Hockey. “Our goal from day one has been to work with the NHL and all of the teams to bring creativity, innovation and energy to the sport with all that we do. What better way to do that than to bring together the nostalgia of historical moments in each teams’ history with something new via designs that have never been seen before in the sport.”
“NHL team jerseys have long carried deep and historical significance for avid and casual hockey fans,” said Brian Jennings, the NHL’s Chief Brand Office and Senior Executive Vice President. “Through the years, the design of each team jersey has evolved to balance history and authenticity with cultural touchpoint. The Reverse Retro program is a celebration of the hockey jersey’s confluence of nostalgia, style and broad appeal. As a brand, adidas sits at the epicentre of youth, sports and lifestyle and is the ideal partner for this exciting initiative.
The Leafs will wear the Reverse Retro jersey in several games during the upcoming 2020-21 season. Special Reverse Retro head-to-head matchups, which will feature exciting new and renewed rivalries, will be announced at a later date.
