QUEBEC CITY, PQ., APRIL 17, 2020 – Imagine driving along the 401 across the top of Toronto and then looking up to see a plane descending towards the highway. Well, this is what happened on Highway 40 near Quebec City yesterday, morning just south of their international airport.

The incident occurred around 10 am and by 10:30 the CBC had already reported it thanks to picking up on some social media posts. The small aircraft, a Piper PA-28 Cherokee experienced a mechanical failure and proceeded to touch down in the centre lane of the westbound Highway 40 just south of Quebec City’s International Airport

One of the most remarkable things aside from the fact that this Piper Cherokee making an emergency landing on a major highway, was that all of the drivers in the area calmly moved aside or slowed down and took wide berths to enable the safe landing of the small aircraft.

The other incredible thing was it all went off without a hitch or any injuries.

As Sgt. Helene Nepton of the Quebec Provincial  Police stated “Fortunately, the aircraft landed without a collision, and then no one was injured. In fact, traffic was able to resume quickly in the area.”

Smoke can be seen billowing out of the left engine of the plane as it makes its careful and well executed descent, cleverly matching the speed of the traffic and landing between a gap in the flow. At one point in fact, you can see are vehicle go around the plane as if it was any other car on the road.

Curiously, in the social media videos, no drivers stop to help.

Luckily due to COVID-19 social distancing measures, there were much fewer drivers on the road.
