Since a Special Weather Statement at 2:46 PM EDT Friday 16 August 2024 was issued for the GTA. Environment and Climate Change Canada has issued two more weather alerts on Saturday late afternoon for the GTA, warning of heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms.

Not the best start for the CNE but if you go this weekend, at least the crowds won’t be as bad! Also looking on the bright side for Torontonians, at least, we are not getting hit by Hurricane Ernesto that has Bermuda in its crosshairs for Saturday!

Now, let’s take a closer look at exactly how this lousy weather is supposed to unfold this weekend in Toronto and the surrounding area.

How much rain?

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue tonight through Sunday. Extremely heavy rain fell this afternoon, surpassing 100 mm over a few locations. Additional rainfall is expected to result in further impacts tonight and Sunday.

Severe thunderstorms Sat. night into Sunday

According to ECCC there is also a risk of a severe thunderstorm in the Toronto area this evening and overnight. Local rainfall amounts to be less than Saturday with 15 to 25 mm expected. Wind east 20 km/h becoming south 20 gusting to 40 late this evening then light after midnight. Low 21.

Beginning this evening and continuing through Sunday evening, there are risks of severe thunderstorms.

Details from ECCC – more rain coming Sunday

Rain, as we know began Friday evening and continues on and off into Sunday. The heaviest rainfall has already fallen on Saturday. A slight lull in showers and thunderstorms is expected overnight Saturday before strengthening Sunday with daytime heating intensifying thunderstorms. This weather pattern typically brings rapidly changing conditions between sunny skies and heavy downpours.

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to taper to isolated showers Monday morning. This weather pattern typically brings rapidly changing conditions between sunny skies and heavy downpours.

Rainfall warnings on short notice

Rainfall warnings may be required and issued on short notice to reflect rapidly changing conditions. Heavy downpours can cause flash floods and water pooling on roads.

Flooding

Localized flooding in low-lying areas is possible. For information concerning flooding, please consult your local Conservation Authority or Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry office.

ECCC advises residents to visit Ontario.ca/floods for the latest details.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or tweet reports using #ONStorm.
