Caledon Native Darren Raddysh Comes Home as Maple Leafs Bolster Blue Line
The Toronto Maple Leafs have made a significant addition to their defence corps, acquiring Caledon native Darren Raddysh from the Tampa Bay Lightning in a sign-and-trade exchange for Toronto’s fifth-round selection in the 2026 NHL Draft. The Maple Leafs also announced that Raddysh has signed an eight-year contract extension with the club, signalling a long-term commitment to one of the NHL’s premier two-way defencemen.
The move addresses one of Toronto’s most pressing offseason priorities: strengthening a blue line that has often lacked the depth, puck-moving ability and offensive production needed to complement the club’s elite forward group. While the Maple Leafs have consistently ranked among the league’s most dangerous offensive teams, improving the defence has remained a key objective as the organization continues its pursuit of a Stanley Cup.
By adding Raddysh, Toronto gains a proven right-shot defenceman entering the prime of his career while also bringing a talented Southern Ontario product back home.
“We are thrilled to add a defenceman of Darren’s calibre to our organization,” said Maple Leafs General Manager John Chayka. “Darren has emerged as one of the NHL’s premier two-way defensemen, combining elite puck-moving ability with poise, competitiveness, and strong play in all three zones. He strengthens our blue line in every situation and is exactly the type of player we want helping lead this team.”
The acquisition is notable not only because of Raddysh’s skill-set but also because of where he is coming from. Tampa Bay has been one of Toronto’s fiercest rivals over the past decade, with the two clubs battling for Atlantic Division supremacy and meeting in several high-profile playoff series. By acquiring Raddysh, the Maple Leafs improve their own roster while simultaneously taking an important piece away from a direct divisional competitor (although he was about to become a UFA).
Trades involving impact players between division rivals are relatively uncommon, making the deal all the more significant. For Toronto, surrendering a fifth-round pick for a player capable of playing major minutes in all situations represents a low-risk move with potentially substantial rewards.
Raddysh, 30, appeared in 73 games with the Lightning last season, recording an impressive career-high 70 points (22 goals, 48 assists). He added a goal and an assist in seven playoff games as Tampa Bay once again qualified for the postseason.
Over 249 NHL regular-season games, all with the Lightning, Raddysh has accumulated 143 points (35 goals, 108 assists), while contributing four points (two goals, two assists) in 20 playoff appearances.
His offensive instincts, ability to move the puck efficiently and effectiveness in all three zones should provide an immediate boost to Toronto’s blue line. The Maple Leafs have often relied heavily on their star forwards to drive offence, and Raddysh’s ability to contribute from the back end could help diversify the attack while improving transition play and puck possession.
For Raddysh, the move also represents a homecoming. The Caledon native grew up less than an hour from Scotiabank Arena and now joins the team many young hockey players across the Greater Toronto Area dream of representing.
Before establishing himself as an NHL regular, Raddysh earned AHL First All-Star Team honours in 2022-23 and represented the Syracuse Crunch at the 2023 AHL All-Star Classic.
His junior hockey résumé is equally impressive. As a member of the Ontario Hockey League’s Erie Otters, Raddysh captured the J. Ross Robertson Cup as an OHL champion, was named to the OHL First All-Star Team, won the Max Kaminsky Trophy as the league’s Most Outstanding Defenceman and earned the Leo Lalonde Trophy as Overage Player of the Year in 2016-17. He was also named to the Memorial Cup All-Star Team after helping Erie reach the championship final.
Originally signed to an entry-level contract by the Chicago Blackhawks on May 21, 2018, Raddysh has steadily developed into one of the NHL’s most effective two-way defencemen. Now, the Caledon native returns home with the opportunity to play a major role in strengthening the Maple Leafs’ blue line and helping Toronto take another step toward Stanley Cup contention.
This deal should pay immediate dividends for the Maple Leafs as they add a bonafide top four blueliner to their roster and only had to surrender a fifth round pick, thanks to his imminent free agent status. Raddysh would have been top of the list for most teams in the hunt for a mobile defencemen, but the Leafs have secured him on the heels of being awarded the top draft pick in this year’s NHL entry draft. So Leafs nation has gone from doom and gloom to a chink of optimism.
