It could be considered the beginning of a new era for Leafs Nation as the Toronto Maple Leafs believe they have found the next cornerstone of their franchise.
On Friday night at KeyBank Center in Buffalo, the Maple Leafs selected Whitehorse, Yukon native Gavin McKenna with the first overall pick in the 2026 NHL Draft, adding one of the most highly touted young forwards in recent memory to a roster already featuring stars Auston Matthews, William Nylander, Matthew Knies and John Tavares.
The opening five selections showcased some of the world’s brightest young hockey talent. After Toronto selected McKenna first overall, the San Jose Sharks chose Swedish winger Ivar Stenberg with the second pick, the Vancouver Canucks selected Brantford, Ont., centre Caleb Malhotra third overall, the host Buffalo Sabres drafted Prince Albert Raiders defenceman Daxon Rudolph fourth, and the New York Rangers rounded out the top five by selecting Latvian defenceman Alberts Smits.
The Biebs Does the Honours
The announcement of Toronto’s selection came with a distinctly Canadian flair. Global pop superstar and lifelong Maple Leafs fan and Stratford’s own, Justin Bieber took to the stage to reveal the franchise’s newest star.
“Mr. McKenna, we would like to draft you to the Toronto Maple Leafs,” Bieber declared before the 18-year-old made his way to the stage to begin the next chapter of his hockey journey.
For McKenna, the moment represented years of dedication, sacrifice and unwavering family support finally paying off.
“It was a very special moment … getting hugged by my family after all these years of hard work and sacrifices that we’ve all put into this,” McKenna said following the selection. “For it to finally be here and experience that moment was one I’ll remember forever, and one of, if not the best days of my life.”
It goes without saying that the Maple Leafs are equally convinced they have landed not only an elite talent but an outstanding person.
“Gavin is an exceptional young man with tremendous talent and character,” Maple Leafs General Manager John Chayka said in a statement released by the club. “Throughout this process, we had the opportunity to get to know him and his family, and each interaction strengthened our belief in him as both a player and a person. We’re thrilled to welcome him to the Toronto Maple Leafs.”
From Whitehorse to hockey’s biggest stage
Born in Whitehorse, Yukon, McKenna has become one of Canada’s greatest hockey success stories. He is only the third player from Yukon ever selected in the NHL Draft and just the second Yukon-born player chosen in the first round, following Dylan Cozens, who went seventh overall to the Buffalo Sabres in 2019.
His rise through the hockey ranks has been nothing short of remarkable.
Before arriving at Penn State University this season, McKenna dominated the Western Hockey League with the Medicine Hat Tigers, recording 244 points (79 goals, 165 assists) in just 133 regular-season games.
His incredible 2024-25 season saw him lead the entire Canadian Hockey League in scoring with 129 points, including 41 goals and 88 assists in only 56 games. He captured CHL Player of the Year honours while helping guide Medicine Hat to a WHL championship. During the Tigers’ playoff run, he added another 38 points (nine goals, 29 assists) in just 16 postseason games.
Rather than jump directly to professional hockey, McKenna chose the NCAA route, enrolling at Penn State for the 2025-26 season.
The decision proved to be another outstanding step in his development.
Playing against older competition, McKenna finished tied for fifth in NCAA scoring with 51 points on 15 goals and 36 assists in 35 games. His 1.46 points per game ranked second nationally, earning him recognition as one of the top 10 finalists for the prestigious Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the NCAA’s top men’s hockey player.
He also became just the fifth NCAA player ever selected first overall in the NHL Draft.
A proven winner
McKenna has consistently elevated his game whenever he has represented Canada.
He captured gold medals at both the 2024 IIHF Under-18 World Championship and the 2024 Hlinka Gretzky Cup before starring for Canada at the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship. Despite Canada’s bronze-medal finish, McKenna recorded 14 points, including four goals and 10 assists, in seven games.
His final stretch at Penn State further demonstrated why NHL scouts unanimously viewed him as the top prospect available. McKenna produced 33 points over his final 19 NCAA games while setting or tying nine school records and earning unanimous Big Ten All-Freshman Team honours.
Family and heritage at the forefront
While his on-ice accomplishments have generated headlines, McKenna ensured his family remained at the centre of one of hockey’s biggest nights.
Moments after hearing his name called, he embraced his parents, Krystal and Willy, along with other family members, including his grandfather, Joe Mason.
“He said he was so proud of me,” McKenna said of his grandfather. “I wish I could relive that moment over and over again.”
McKenna also used the moment to reflect on aspects of his family and heritage. His custom suit jacket featured photographs of family members while brooches paid tribute to his Canadian Indigenous roots. His family members in attendance also reflected that cultural pride. While McKenna has not publicly detailed specific community affiliation in major draft reporting, his acknowledgement of Indigenous heritage was visible throughout one of the most important nights of his career.
“Without those people, I wouldn’t be here today, so the least I can do is put them in my suit jacket,” McKenna said.
Joining Maple Leafs Royalty
McKenna now joins one of the most exclusive clubs in Maple Leafs history.
He becomes just the third player ever selected first overall by the franchise, following Hall of Famer Wendel Clark in 1985 and current captain Auston Matthews in 2016 who coincidentally was also selected in Buffalo. Leafs fans will undoubtedly hope the Yukon phenom follows a similar path and becomes the next face of the franchise.
Matthews also welcomed Toronto’s newest prospect through a pre-recorded video message shown during the draft.
“I know how exciting this is for you and your family, and what an incredible honour it is,” Matthews said. “Congratulations, we’re just as excited to have you join the Maple Leafs, and cannot wait to get started. You’re coming to a franchise with an amazing history and fanbase and we’re all working to write the next great chapter together, and you’re going to be a very important part of that.”
Those words perfectly capture the expectations now surrounding one of hockey’s brightest young stars and one of the NHL’s most storied franchises (okay, maybe not so much lately).
For a franchise still searching for its first Stanley Cup since 1967, McKenna represents more than simply another first-overall draft pick. He arrives as the latest symbol of hope for a fan base longing to see hockey’s most storied Canadian franchise return to championship glory.
Whether he cracks Toronto’s lineup immediately or continues his development before making the jump to the NHL, there is little doubt Maple Leafs fans will be following every step of Gavin McKenna’s journey.
After years of anticipation, one of hockey’s most gifted young talents is officially coming to Toronto. The next chapter in Maple Leafs history has begun.
