Last night, Schitt’s Creek won the Golden Globe award for best television comedy, while Toronto actor Catherine O’Hara was awarded the GG for best actress for her portrayal of Moira Rose on the popular CBC series.

The show’s creators, Dan and Eugene Levy accepted the award virtually. During the award acceptance, Dan Levy sporting a bright lemon yellow jacket framing an extravagant golden sequined shirt, proudly acknowledged the show’s Canadian cast and crew.

“I would like to congratulate our amazing cast and crew, most of whom are in Canada right now like myself, watching from home. The incredible work you all did over these past six seasons has taken us to places we never thought possible, and we are so grateful to all of you for it,” said Dan Levy.

“Thank you to the CBC and Pop TV for making the active choice to keep this show on the air and give it the time and space it needed to grow,” added Dan Levy.

Levy also gave a nod to the Canadian show’s spirit of inclusion and suggested a hope for increased recognition to more diverse film and television productions.

“This acknowledgement is a lovely vote of confidence in the messages “Schitt’s Creek” has come to stand for; the idea that inclusion can bring about growth and love to a community. In the spirit of inclusion, I hope that this time next year, this ceremony reflects the true breadth and diversity of the film and television being made today, because there is so much more to be celebrated. Thank you very, very much.”

Earlier, Schitt’s Creek star Catherine O’hara accepted the Golden Globe award for Best Perfomance by an Actress in a Television Series Musical or Comedy.

“I am happily and sincerely indebted to Eugene and Daniel Levy from Day One, they treated me like something like this might happen!” said O’Hara.

“They created an inspiring, funny, beautiful family love story, in which they let me wear a hundred wigs and speak like an alien,” O’Hara chuckles. “From the first read-through where no one had to fake a laugh, to the final day on-set where everyone except me had to hold back their tears, it’s an experience I will forever hold dear to my heart, although I’m not really.”

“Thank you CBC for making this show in Canada,” added O’Hara, who also joked about Netflix bringing the show to a nation in lockdown.

“Thank you Netflix, when we were sheltering in place, Netflix brought this show around the world! To our family in lockdown … I hope it won’t take you six years to realize your greatest asset is who you manage to love!”

Schitt’s Creek stars Eugene Levy, Dan Levy and Annie Murphy were also each nominated for acting awards in their respective categories.

Schitt’s Creek, which aired on CBC and Pop TV, ended its sixth and final season last April and also recently won seven Emmy awards including Best Comedy Series, Sunday night at the 72nd Annual Emmy Awards. “Schitt’s Creek” was the first series to win every major comedy series award.
