Special Weather Statement: Two rounds of freezing rain expected to hit Toronto

TORONTO, March 28, 2025 – Good morning and TGIF. The foreboding “ice storm” that we have been hearing about for a few days now, is going to hit TO on Friday night followed by second pelting coming Saturday night. As we learned last month, when Environment Canada is warning of storms several days in advance, you can be almost certain they will happen. However, right now the early warnings have been walked back a little as the brunt of the storm is expected to occur north of the city, but Toronto still will be faced with freezing rain and ice accretion (a fancy shorter way to say accumulation) of 3 to 5 mm over night.

The freezing rain will then stop at some point Saturday morning before kicking into high gear again on Saturday night into Sunday morning. Basically, the rain will freeze up the temperature drops throughout the nights across the weekend.

Here are all the main details released by ECCC:

Special Weather Statement in effect for:

  • City of Toronto

Freezing rain possible tonight. Freezing rain likely Saturday night or Sunday morning.

What:

Possible ice accretion of 3 to 5 mm. Possible utility outages. Slippery surfaces and broken tree branches from ice build-up.

When:

Tonight into Saturday morning. Additional freezing rain Saturday night into Sunday.

More details:

Environment and Climate Change Canada says, “There is a risk of freezing rain tonight, possibly into Saturday morning, as temperatures will be near the freezing mark. A second round of freezing rain is expected Saturday night into Sunday as temperatures cool below the freezing mark.”

Icy roads and sidewalks, use extreme caution

Of course, the result will be icy, slippery roads and sidewalks across the weekend, so be extremely careful when venturing out. Drive with extreme caution.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to ONstorm@ec.gc.ca or post reports on X using #ONStorm.
