Toronto Argonauts touch down at City Hall for 150th anniversary flag raising
TORONTO, October 5, 2023 – Yesterday everyone was in fine spirits outside City Hall as the City of Toronto held a flag-raising ceremony to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Toronto Argonauts Football Club. Several Argos players, alumni and dignitaries, including Argos GM Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons along with Mayor Olivia Chow were on hand to help raise the flag.
The Toronto Argonauts are North America’s oldest professional sports franchise, still using their original name.
Toronto Argonauts fans were invited to attend and show their support at City Hall.
The ceremony included remarks by Mayor Olivia Chow and Michael “Pinball” Clemons, General Manager of the Argos, with a special appearance from Jason the Argonaut, the team’s mascot. Also in attendance were current and former Argos team members, including:
- Adriano Belli, retired Toronto Argonauts player
- Andrew Harris, Toronto Argonauts running back player
- Damon Allen, retired Toronto Argonauts player, Canadian Football League record-holder for ‘All-Time Rushing Yards by a Quarterback
- Dashaun Amos, Toronto Argonauts defensive back player
- Henoc Muamba, Toronto Argonauts linebacker player, 2022 Grey Cup’s Most Valuable Player and Most Valuable Canadian
- Matt Black, retired Toronto Argonauts player
- Mike Eben, retired Toronto Argonauts player

Founded on October 4, 1873, the Argos hold the Canadian Football League record for Grey Cup titles with 18 wins to their credit. As part of its anniversary celebrations, the club, in cooperation with Football Toronto, will host the Argos Cup, a flag football tournament featuring teams from 20 schools across the Greater Toronto Area. The team is also set to face the Edmonton Elks on October 6 with a special pre-game tailgate and a halftime event planned.
