TORONTO, ON., July 8, 2020 — Toronto thunderstorm causes power outages — According to Toronto Hydro’s outage map, several areas around the city are reporting power outages including Etobicoke, Bloor West Village, The Beaches, The Junction, and North York. The city was under a tornado watch but what ensued was a huge storm and torrential downpour causing a great deal of isolated flooding mid-afternoon and power outages for around 15,000 residents.

“We’re currently responding to scattered outages across the city. Crews are working as quickly & safely as possible to restore power, provided the conditions are safe & favourable to perform work activities,” wrote Toronto Hydro on Twitter in response to countless complaints of outages as things start to heat up again for residents.

Toronto Hydro told CP24 that if anyone witnesses hydro wires that have fallen please remain at least 10 feet away for safety purposes approximately the distance of a school bus. They also posted a number to call to report the downed wires.

There was a lot of activity leading up to the sudden storm and during the intense downpour as much as 65 mm of rain in some areas caused major flooding around the city due to the city’s storm drains being unable to cope with the large water volume.

“The combination of weak winds aloft and high amounts of moisture in the atmosphere is what made for a very slow moving storm that was able to dump an abundance of rain over a localized areas in a small period of time,” explained Brad Rousseau, a meteorologist at The Weather Network.

The storm and tornado watch for Toronto has now been lifted by Environment Canada and the heatwave is expected to break this weekend with isolated showers and thunderstorms starting on Friday according to The Weather Network.
