Toronto Star shutting down StarMetro newspapers

TorStar Corp. has decided to get with the Times and go online. TorStar Corp announced today that they will be shutting down the StarMetro series of free publications across the country. Extra Extra, ‘StarMetro shutting down newspapers.’

The number of employees out of work is not certain at this time but estimated at 70 or more.

The StarMetro papers are published in Toronto, Calgary, Edmonton and Vancouver. The last printed edition in all cities is scheduled for December 20, 2019. The StarMetro papers will be transitioning to digital only from that day forward.

“Commuters are using their smartphones, tablets, etc. to access their news,” said a spokesperson from TorStar Corp. “This trend has decreased the need for free daily newspapers on passengers commute.”
