Toronto’s newest park just opened along the waterfront

TORONTO, June 23, 2023 – Today, Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie (Scarborough-Rouge Park) was joined by Councillor Ausma Malik (Spadina-Fort York), Julie Dabrusin, Member of Parliament for Toronto-Danforth and Waterfront Toronto Chair Stephen Diamond, to officially open the new Love Park (96 Queens Quay W.) along Toronto’s waterfront.

Many Torontonians helped them spread the love for this endearing new community space by enjoying live music, fun family activities and two official wedding ceremonies.

The new two-acre (8,100-square-metre) park creates an urban oasis and responds to the need of the growing population in the downtown core for flexible public space for residents, office workers and the thousands of tourists who visit the city’s central waterfront each year.

Features within the park include:

• A large, shallow, heart-shaped pond at the park’s centre, combined with existing and newly planted trees to create a tranquil area amongst the bustling city streets
• A gently swirling pathway for pedestrians to move through the park quickly or stroll and enjoy a calm respite
• Nine bronze-cast Canadian animals and moveable café-style tables and chairs sponsored by the Waterfront BIA
• A trellis, a drinking fountain and a dog’s off-leash area

An international design competition for Love Park led to it being designed by CCxA (Sugar Beach, HTO Park, Berczy Park) in collaboration with gh3*. The Government of Canada funded the project in part through the Federal Economic Development Agency for Southern Ontario (FedDev Ontario).

“Love Park embodies the City’s ongoing efforts and leadership to embrace innovative and exciting community spaces through collaboration with the Government of Canada and multiple waterfront partners,” said Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie (Scarborough-Rouge Park), Chair of the Infrastructure and Environment Committee. “Our combined dedication has helped create North America’s largest urban redevelopment program and one of the most extensive waterfront revitalization efforts in the world,” said McKelvie.

Love Park is one of many City of Toronto waterfront projects being realized by multi-year investments in parks and community centres. These investments contribute to the overall legacy of waterfront development, while affirming the City’s commitment to ensuring liveable, sustainable and connected communities along Toronto’s central waterfront.
