MISSISSAUGA, ON – UPDATE: Tornado warning ended at 12:50 pm Saturday.
Environment and Climate Change Canada issued a Tornado Warning for the West GTA, including: Burlington, Milton, Mississauga, Oakville and Brampton areas, as a dangerous severe thunderstorm capable of producing a tornado moves through the western Greater Toronto Area.
At 12:27 p.m. EDT, meteorologists were tracking a severe thunderstorm located east of Milton, moving southeast at approximately 50 km/h toward Oakville and Mississauga.
The storm is capable of producing a tornado, with damaging wind gusts of up to 90 km/h, large hail and 15 to 30 millimetres of heavy rainfall.
Environment Canada describes the situation as “very dangerous and potentially life-threatening.”
Take cover immediately
Residents in the warning area are urged to seek shelter immediately.
The safest place during a tornado is in a basement or an interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows and exterior walls.
If you are outside and cannot reach a sturdy shelter, move to a low-lying area such as a ditch and protect your head from flying debris. Those on the water should return to shore immediately if it is safe to do so. If that isn’t possible, move away from the storm’s path, wear a lifejacket and lie face down while protecting your head.
Tornadoes may be hidden by heavy rain
Environment Canada warns that tornadoes can be wrapped in heavy rain, making them difficult or impossible to see until they are very close.
A Tornado Warning is issued when a thunderstorm is producing a tornado or conditions indicate one is likely to develop.
Emergency Management Ontario is urging residents to take cover immediately if threatening weather approaches.
The warning remains in effect for Mississauga and Brampton, with the storm continuing to move southeast at about 50 km/h.
Residents are encouraged to monitor Environment and Climate Change Canada for updated warnings and be prepared to act quickly if conditions worsen.
